What the FAQ is up with Surfacer and Primer?

Welcome to What the FAQ, a new series of articles I’m writing to highlight some parts of the hobby I haven’t seen written out plainly and other information that feels more obscure than it needs to be.

Today’s topic is Primer and Surfacer! Both are staples in most people’s paint collections but did you know they serve different purposes?

Phosphophylite by Papo Digital – フォスフォフィライト 原型:パポデジタル

This Phosphophylite from the series Land of the Lustrous/Houseki no Kuni, sculpted by Papo Digital is in my opinion, a masterpiece of sculpts. Their expression changes depending on the viewing angle, their physique is super defined and looks good from all angles.

Without going into spoiler territory (Read the series if you haven’t!), I wanted to show off all the changes in their makeup since the beginning of the series and really wanted to paint their agate leg haha. The gold used is foiled on the kit. It’s unfortunately not real gold leaf but depending on how you look at it, you could also say it carries a small nod toward Lapis usually containing Pyrite (Fool’s gold). There was an experiment by @garzambiko which I borrowed to add some extra definition to the hair (“wrap painting”, a method using cling wrap to make marble patterns in wet paint). I was going to add the usual sodalite/calcite veins in their hair too but fell in love with how the blue looked.

I feel with this kit, I was able to achieve my goal of trying several new techniques while also making the kit a little more colourful than the original prototype art.

Etna and Prinny by Kamio Rintaro/Charagumin – エトナとプリニー 原型: 神尾 林太郎

This duo was a project several years in the making! I originally got this kit close to when I started the hobby, before I got my airbrush. With this kit, I experimented with adding white”shiny lines” to the kit to mimic light hitting it. I think it went okay.

They have been airbrushed from a white base, despite the coloured resin as I felt some of the colours (the Red and Blue specifically) were too “harsh”. The “black” resin was also a dark blue originally!
They were airbrushed using lacquer paints by Mr Hobby and Scale Modellers Supply.
